Year 2’s Visit to Flavourfresh – 24th April 2018

Last Tuesday morning, Y2 visited Flavour Fresh to find out how strawberries and tomatoes are grown and the conditions that are best for growth.

First we visited the Hundred End site, where we were told all about the strawberries by Kevin. He told us all about the growth conditions for a great crop. They plants need warmth, water, food or nutrients and humidity. Did you know that the strawberries are grown in crushed coconut shells, not soil? We even saw the bees in their house. They are needed for the strawberry plant to be pollinated and make the strawberry fruit. Then the best bit, we were allowed to choose and pick 1 strawberry and eat it. Delicious!
Then off to the main Flavour Fresh site at Hesketh Bank, where David told us a bit about what the tomato plants need to grow. Then David let us pretend to be workers in the greenhouse and we were allowed to pick as many tomatoes as we wanted. Some of us picked lots!
Then off into the packing house to taste some of the different sorts of tomatoes and other salad vegetable’s like cucumber and peppers.
We had a great time at Flavour Fresh and thank Mr and Mrs Edgar for helping to organise our visit and give us our goodie bags.
